What is Hyperfocus?

Hyperfocus: How to Manage Your Attention in a World of Distraction is a practical, research-based book by productivity expert Chris Bailey. It explores how to harness two powerful modes of attention—hyperfocus and scatterfocus—to help you work smarter, avoid distraction, and spark creativity.

Rather than trying to do more, the book encourages doing fewer things with greater presence and intentionality. It’s a guide to reclaiming your mental space and using your attention as a powerful tool for productivity and clarity.

How does it work?

The book breaks attention into two modes:

  • Hyperfocus: a state of deep concentration where you work on one task with full attention
  • Scatterfocus: a relaxed, open mode that allows ideas to surface and connections to form

Bailey provides actionable strategies to shift between these states, such as minimizing digital interruptions, scheduling time for focus and rest, and choosing your most valuable task in each moment. He also shares personal experiments, relatable stories, and cognitive science insights to support each idea.

Why is Hyperfocus helpful for attention?

In an environment of constant pings, alerts, and open tabs, attention is your most limited and valuable resource. Hyperfocus helps you protect and direct that resource wisely. You’ll learn how to reduce mind-wandering, get more done in less time, and develop a deeper awareness of where your focus goes—and why.

By also embracing scatterfocus, you avoid burnout and allow space for insight, creativity, and mental renewal.

Who is Hyperfocus best for?

  • Professionals and students who struggle to stay focused amid constant distraction
  • Creatives and problem-solvers seeking a balance between structure and spontaneity
  • Productivity-minded readers looking for practical, science-based strategies
  • Anyone feeling mentally scattered and wanting to reclaim control of their attention
